Quantum Cryptography over Underground Optical Fibers

چکیده
Quantum cryptography is an emerging technology in which two parties may simultaneously generate shared, secret cryptographic key material using the transmission of quantum states of light whose security is based on the inviolability of the laws of quantum mechanics. An adversary can neither successfully tap the key transmissions, nor evade detection, owing to Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle. In this paper we describe the theory of quantum cryptography, and the most recent results from our experimental system with which we are generating key material over 14km of underground optical fiber. These results demonstrate that opticalfiber based quantum cryptography could allow secure, real-time key generation over “open” multi-km node-to-node optical fiber communications links between secure “islands.”

Overcoming quantum noise in optical fibers
Noise in optical telecommunication fibers is an important limitation on optical quantum data transmission. Unfortunately, the classically successful amplifiers cannot be used in quantum communication because of the no-cloning theorem. We propose a simple method to reduce quantum noise: the insertion of phase shifters and/or beam splitters at regular distance intervals into a fiber. We analyze i...
متن کاملUntappable communication channels over optical fibers from quantum-optical noise
Coherent light, as produced by lasers, gives rise to an intrinsic noise, known as quantum noise, optical noise or shot noise. AlphaEta is a protocol which exploits this physical phenomenon to obtain secure data encryption or key distribution over a fiber-optic channel in the presence of an eavesdropper. In this paper we focus on the cryptographic aspects of AlphaEta and its variants. Moreover, ...
متن کاملOptoelectronic Quantum Telecommunications Based on Spins in Semiconductors
The transmission of quantum information over long distances will allow new forms of data security, based on quantum cryptography. These new technologies rely for security on the quantum “uncertainty principle” and on the long distance transmission of “quantum entanglement.” A new type of telecommunications device called the “quantum repeater” can allow the faithful transmission of quantum infor...
متن کاملQuantum cryptography and long distance Bell experiments: How to control decoherence
Several mechanisms that affect one and two photon coherence in optical fibers and their remedies are discussed. The results are illustrated on quantum cryptography experiments and on long distance Bell inequality tests.
متن کاملGeneration and manipulation of squeezed states of light in optical networks for quantum communication and computation
We analyze a fiber-optic component which could find multiple uses in novel information-processing systems utilizing squeezed states of light. Our approach is based on the phenomenon of photon-number squeezing of soliton noise after the soliton has propagated through a nonlinear optical fiber. Applications of this component in optical networks for quantum computation and quantum cryptography are...
